OpenAI has officially rolled out GPT-5.5 Instant as the new default model powering ChatGPT, replacing GPT-5.3 Instant for its massive global user base. The update, announced on May 5, 2026, focuses heavily on improving factual reliability, reducing hallucinations, and strengthening performance in sensitive areas such as medicine, law, and finance while maintaining the fast response speeds users expect from ChatGPT.

The release may appear incremental compared to major flagship launches, but OpenAI is positioning it as one of its most impactful updates precisely because it affects hundreds of millions of everyday interactions across the platform.

OpenAI Is Prioritizing Accuracy Over Flashier Features

The central goal of GPT-5.5 Instant is reducing incorrect or fabricated information, a persistent issue across large language models.

According to OpenAI’s internal evaluations, the model shows a 52.5% reduction in hallucinated claims on high-stakes prompts compared to GPT-5.3 Instant. The company also reported a 37.3% decrease in inaccurate responses in conversations that users had previously flagged for factual errors.

The improvements are particularly important in areas like healthcare and financial information, where incorrect AI-generated responses can carry real-world consequences. OpenAI emphasized that even relatively small improvements become highly significant when deployed at ChatGPT’s scale.

Better Performance Across Math, Images, and STEM Tasks

Beyond hallucination reduction, GPT-5.5 Instant also delivers measurable gains across reasoning and multimodal benchmarks.

OpenAI says the model performs substantially better on mathematical and STEM-focused evaluations, including the AIME 2025 benchmark, where scores reportedly improved by more than 24% compared to GPT-5.3 Instant. Multimodal reasoning performance also increased, reflecting stronger handling of image-based tasks and visual analysis.

The updated model is designed to analyze uploaded images more effectively, answer technical questions more accurately, and decide more intelligently when web search should be used to supplement responses.

That combination reflects OpenAI’s broader strategy of making ChatGPT feel more useful in practical workflows rather than simply more conversational.

Memory and Personal Context Expand Further

One of the most significant additions involves how GPT-5.5 Instant handles memory and contextual personalization.

The model can now pull more actively from past conversations, uploaded documents, and connected Gmail accounts to generate responses that feel more context-aware. OpenAI says the system has improved relevance detection, making it better at surfacing useful historical information from prior interactions.

To address transparency concerns, ChatGPT now shows users which memory sources influenced a response. Users can also delete outdated information or correct inaccurate memories directly.

The enhanced memory system is currently rolling out first to Plus and Pro subscribers on web, with broader availability planned across mobile and enterprise tiers in the coming weeks.

An Overview of OpenAI's ChatGPT & Its Impressive Capability

OpenAI Classifies GPT-5.5 Instant as “High Capability”

One of the more notable aspects of the release is its safety classification.

OpenAI has labeled GPT-5.5 Instant as a “High Capability” model in cybersecurity and biology domains, a designation previously reserved for more advanced reasoning-focused systems. That means the model operates under stricter automated safeguards designed to prevent misuse in areas such as hacking assistance or dangerous biological guidance.

The classification reflects how capable even mainstream conversational models are becoming. Systems once treated as lightweight assistants are now powerful enough to require frontier-level safety controls.

Developers Face a Transition Away From GPT-5.3 Instant

For developers, GPT-5.5 Instant is now available through OpenAI’s API under the “chat-latest” option.

OpenAI says GPT-5.3 Instant will remain selectable for roughly three months before being fully deprecated. After that period, GPT-5.5 Instant will become the standard Instant model across the platform.

The updated model maintains backward compatibility with existing integrations while adding stronger multimodal support and improved contextual reasoning.

Part of OpenAI’s Broader GPT-5.5 Push

GPT-5.5 Instant is part of the wider GPT-5.5 model family OpenAI introduced in April 2026.

The broader lineup includes GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.5 Pro, which target more advanced reasoning, professional workflows, and coding tasks. OpenAI has described GPT-5.5 as its “smartest and most intuitive” system so far, with the company increasingly framing ChatGPT as a unified AI platform rather than just a chatbot.

OpenAI president Greg Brockman previously linked the GPT-5.5 family to the company’s long-term “super app” ambitions, where AI handles everything from coding and search to productivity and workflow execution.

OpenAI Is Also Managing User Expectations More Carefully

The rollout comes after earlier backlash surrounding model retirements.

When OpenAI phased out GPT-4o in early 2026, many users reacted emotionally, describing strong attachments to the model’s conversational style and behavior. The controversy highlighted how users increasingly perceive AI models as having distinct personalities and interaction patterns rather than interchangeable software systems.

That experience appears to be influencing how OpenAI handles transitions between models, particularly for systems used daily by millions of people.

The Bigger Goal: Making AI Feel More Reliable

The release of GPT-5.5 Instant highlights a broader shift in the AI industry.

Rather than focusing only on larger models or dramatic new capabilities, companies are increasingly investing in reliability, accuracy, and trustworthiness. As AI systems become more deeply integrated into healthcare, education, finance, and workplace workflows, reducing hallucinations is becoming just as important as expanding capability.

For OpenAI, GPT-5.5 Instant represents that transition clearly. It is not the company’s most advanced reasoning model, but it may become one of its most influential because it shapes the everyday experience of ChatGPT for hundreds of millions of users.

The company’s message is increasingly clear: the future of AI will not be defined only by how intelligent models become, but by how dependable they feel in ordinary use.
