Google has quietly released a new dictation app called AI Edge Eloquent, entering a crowded but fast-growing category of AI writing assistants that convert speech into structured text. Unlike most competitors, the app arrived without a formal announcement, appearing directly on the iOS App Store and surfacing through early coverage and user discovery.

Despite the low-profile debut, the positioning is clear. Eloquent targets the same space as tools like Wispr Flow and SuperWhisper but shifts the focus toward on-device processing, privacy, and zero-cost access. The combination could reshape expectations in a category where subscription pricing and cloud dependence have been the norm.

Dictation, but cleaned and structured in real time

At its core, Eloquent functions as a real-time dictation app. Users speak, and the app transcribes speech instantly. But the differentiator is what happens after transcription.

Instead of producing raw, unfiltered text, the app automatically removes filler words such as “um” and “uh,” smooths interruptions, and restructures sentences into readable prose. The result is not just transcription but pre-edited output that feels closer to a finished draft than a rough capture.

Below the live transcript, users can apply one-tap transformations including “Key points,” “Formal,” “Short,” and “Long.” These modes allow the same spoken input to be reshaped into summaries, refined writing, or expanded content without leaving the app.

This positions Eloquent somewhere between a dictation tool and a lightweight writing assistant.

Built on-device, with optional cloud enhancement

The defining technical choice behind Eloquent is its reliance on Google’s Gemma-based speech recognition models, which run directly on the device. Once downloaded, these models allow dictation to function fully offline.

That has two immediate implications. First, latency is reduced because speech does not need to be sent to the cloud for processing. Second, privacy improves, since raw voice data can remain on the device unless the user opts into additional features.

For users who want more advanced editing, Eloquent offers an optional cloud mode. When enabled, the app sends text to Gemini models for deeper rewriting and refinement. When disabled, all processing remains local.

This hybrid approach gives users control over how much of their data leaves their device, a design decision that aligns with growing demand for privacy-focused AI tools.

Personal vocabulary and searchable sessions

Eloquent also introduces a personalization layer aimed at improving transcription accuracy over time. With user permission, the app can pull names and commonly used terms from Gmail history to better recognize context-specific language.

Users can also manually add custom vocabulary, making it more reliable for niche domains such as technical writing, business communication, or industry jargon.

Beyond transcription, the app stores past sessions, allowing users to search previous dictations and track metrics like words per minute. This moves it closer to a productivity tool rather than a one-off utility.

Eloquent is not an isolated release. It reflects Google’s broader push toward AI Edge computing, where models run directly on devices instead of relying entirely on cloud infrastructure.

The approach builds on earlier efforts, including Google’s on-device speech recognition introduced in Gboard on Pixel devices. However, those features were embedded within keyboards. Eloquent separates the experience into a dedicated app with added layers of editing, summarization, and formatting.

iOS first, but Android integration expected

positions it as a strong alternative to existing paid services.

For users, this reduces friction both financially and technically. For competitors, it introduces pressure on pricing models that rely heavily on recurring revenue.

The timing of Eloquent’s release reflects a broader shift in how AI tools are evolving.

Earlier waves of AI focused on generating content. The current wave is moving toward integrating AI into everyday workflows, reducing friction between input and output.
