Anysphere, the startup behind the rapidly growing AI-powered code editor Cursor, has launched a new “Ultra” subscription tier priced at $200 per month. The plan targets power users and large-scale engineering teams, giving them vastly expanded access to premium AI models and tools.

The Ultra tier includes up to 20x more usage of AI APIs from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and xAI—unlocking enhanced performance for users with intense workloads.

What’s Included in the Ultra Tier?

Ultra subscribers gain:

  • Priority access to all model endpoints
  • Early features like AI agents and multi-file reasoning
  • Enterprise-grade support
  • Enhanced memory and compute quota

Anysphere CEO Michael Truell stated in the company’s blog that the Ultra plan was made possible through multi-year partnerships with model providers—mirroring recent trends from OpenAI and Anthropic, which have also launched $100–$250/month plans for heavy usage tiers.

Cursor’s Business Is Booming

The Ultra tier is expected to further boost Anysphere’s already meteoric growth. Earlier this month, the company reported that Cursor had surpassed $500 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) and was being actively used by engineering teams at Nvidia, Uber, and Adobe.

Cursor added over $200 million in ARR growth since April, building on its milestone as one of the fastest companies to ever reach $100 million in ARR.

This growth reflects rising demand for AI-native coding environments—but it’s also drawing increased competition.

The AI Coding Wars Are Heating Up

While Cursor rides high on growth, it's facing new threats from the very model providers it relies on.

OpenAI recently acquired Cursor rival Windsurf to build out its own native AI coding platform, a clear signal that it’s coming for Cursor’s user base.

Anthropic continues to invest heavily in Claude Code, its in-house engineering tool powered by its Claude 3 models.

As the competition intensifies, vendors are pulling strategic levers—with Anthropic reportedly cutting Windsurf’s direct Claude access to undercut OpenAI.

These moves highlight the rising tension between AI infrastructure providers and coding tool platforms, many of which are starting to collide.

Can Anysphere Stay Ahead?

Anysphere’s open model-neutral approach has been a core strength. Unlike OpenAI or Claude-based tools, Cursor supports multiple model integrations, including its own developing model called Tab.

However, as providers consolidate ecosystems and gate access, Cursor’s reliance on third-party models could become a bottleneck—unless it accelerates its internal model development and diversifies infrastructure.

The launch of Ultra may solve demand for now, but strategy will determine Cursor’s sustainability long-term.

What’s Next for Cursor?

  • Full rollout of Ultra to enterprise customers and power users
  • Feature expansion in AI agent tooling and automated debugging
  • Deeper integration with Git systems, CI/CD, and enterprise workflows
  • Increased investment in proprietary models to reduce external dependence

Final Take

Cursor Ultra is a bold move—cementing Anysphere’s place among the top AI coding platforms. But the race is no longer just about features; it's about control, infrastructure, and defensibility. As AI giants continue to compete on every layer of the stack, Anysphere will need to keep innovating fast, or risk getting boxed in by its own ecosystem.
