A quiet scandal is unfolding in the world of academic publishing: researchers from 14 of the world’s top universities have been embedding invisible AI prompts inside their papers, directing AI reviewers to give only positive feedback. These prompts are not visible to the human eye—often written in white text, tiny font sizes, or buried in footnotes—but are easily picked up by AI-based peer review systems.

A probe led by Nikkei analyzed 17 preprint papers on arXiv and exposed the covert tactic. These prompts often evaded human detection but were traceable through document inspection tools.

University Reactions: Condemnation and Justification

Responses varied sharply:

KAIST called the act “inappropriate” and withdrew one of its papers from a conference.

A Waseda professor defended the practice, claiming it merely ensured the AI “reviewed the paper seriously”—especially since many peer reviewers rely heavily on AI tools.
